7 Not-So-Spooky Halloween Art Ideas for Kids

Halloween is full of colors, characters, and stories—everything young artists need for an afternoon of imaginative play.

These projects are festive without being too scary, and most can be created on a chalkboard, whiteboard, or paper roll with supplies you may already have at home.

Friendly Ghosts and Pumpkin Faces

1. Draw a friendly ghost neighborhood. Give each ghost a home, name, and personality. One might live in a pumpkin, another in a tiny castle, and another in a house made of candy.

2. Design a jack-o’-lantern face gallery. Divide the board into sections and create a different pumpkin expression in each one: surprised, sleepy, excited, silly, or proud.

Costume Ideas and a Chalkboard Night Sky

3. Invent a costume for an animal. Ask what a dinosaur, puppy, owl, or octopus would wear for Halloween. Draw the animal first, then add a costume and accessories.

4. Make a chalkboard night sky. Use light-colored chalk on a dark board to draw a moon, stars, bats, clouds, and glowing windows. Gently blend selected areas for a soft nighttime effect.

Try a Color Challenge and Build a Monster

5. Create a Halloween color challenge. Choose three colors—such as orange, green, and purple—and make an entire picture using only those shades.

6. Build a monster one shape at a time. Take turns adding one shape to the board. A circle might become an eye, a triangle might become a hat, and a rectangle might become a pair of boots.

Create a Family Halloween Welcome Sign

7. Make a seasonal sign together. Use the paper roll or whiteboard to create a sign for your entryway or Halloween gathering. Add pumpkins, stars, candy, and a message such as “Happy Halloween.”

Take a photo before erasing it so the artwork becomes part of your family’s Halloween memories. Keep the focus on choosing colors, changing the story, and creating together.
