7 Easy Ways to Celebrate National Arts and Humanities Month with Your Child

October is National Arts and Humanities Month, a nationwide celebration of the ways art, stories, music, and culture enrich everyday life. For families, it is also a wonderful invitation to slow down, make something together, and give children space to express their ideas.

A creative activity does not need to be complicated or picture-perfect. A few drawing supplies, an open-ended prompt, and a child-sized place to work can turn an ordinary afternoon into something memorable. Here are seven easy ways to celebrate creativity at home this October.

Begin with Simple Drawing Prompts

1. Start with a five-minute drawing prompt. Ask a question such as: What would your dream playground look like? What lives on a purple planet? If your favorite animal wore a costume, what would it choose?

2. Create a family art challenge. Choose one theme—fall leaves, silly monsters, favorite foods, or a family adventure—and invite everyone to make their own version. There is no winner. The fun is seeing how one idea becomes several completely different pictures.

Turn Drawing into Storytelling

3. Turn the easel into a storytelling stage. Draw three simple scenes on a whiteboard, chalkboard, or paper roll: a beginning, a surprise, and an ending. Ask your child to connect the scenes with a story.

4. Explore one color at a time. Pick a color of the day and look for it around the house or outdoors. Then create a picture using that color plus one contrasting shade.

Find Inspiration in Everyday Life

5. Make art inspired by nature. Observe fallen leaves, clouds, pumpkins, and trees, then use those shapes and colors as inspiration for a drawing, collage, or chalk picture.

6. Open a mini home gallery. Let your child choose one or two pieces to display. Add a small label with the artwork’s title and the artist’s name. Ask what they would like people to notice about their creation.

Share and Save Creative Memories

7. Share the creative moment. Send a photo of the finished artwork to a grandparent, friend, or family group chat. You can also save one picture each month and look back at how your child’s interests and imagination change over time.

Children are more likely to create when supplies are visible and easy to reach. A dedicated kids’ easel keeps paper, chalk, markers, and paint cups together while giving young artists a surface that feels like their own.
